Fringe: Earthling

Oh, hey, folks, my debut recap of last week's Fringe episode ("Earthling") is up at TVgasm. Check it out, if you're so inclined.

Hooray! Glad to see your Fringe review up, Morgan.

Thanks, Ingrid. I think it'll take me a bit of time to get used to the longer format of the TVgasm reviews -- it should've been about eight pages, and I was hard-pressed to extend it to six. It'll get easier with time, I assume.

Weird. For some reason, my main computer can't comment on this post but, apparently, my laptop can. I don't know what to make of that.

Anyways, all I really wanted to say was that it was a great recap, Morgan. Almost made me wish I still watched Fringe.

Almost.

I'll follow the recaps for a while and see if I get interested enough to splurge on the Season One DVD.

Huh. Weird that you were having trouble posting comments, Dan. If anybody else has a problem, let me know. Ingrid's comment double-posted, so it sounds like Blogger might be acting up again.

I dig Fringe. Just finished up the first season, and I thought it was pretty nifty. Some slow episodes in the middle, but still: parallel worlds! Leonard Nimoy! It's all good.

Yes, the parallel worlds bit was the bit that almost made me wish I'd kept watching. I love parallel worlds. If there was a show where people time-travelled on parallel worlds to right wrongs and do awesome stuff, I'd be in television heaven.

Especially if those people were bikini-wearing, wisecracking swimsuit models who were led by a kickass talking turtle.

(Note to self: write this show)

Big fan of parallel worlds. Loved the Fringe season finale where Olivia's chatting with Leonard Nimoy and suddenly realizes she's standing in the World Trade Center. Cool stuff. Very few swimsuit models, and not a single wisecracking talking turtle, though. Perhaps that's all that's missing.

Read your recap, felt like I'm re-watching the episode with pauses at interesting details =)

I think the Russian guy's surname may be Kozlov, not Koslov. "Kozlov" is a common Russian surname, has some negative connotations to it. The origin word of this surname, "Kozel" (direct translation: "he-goat"), = a bad man. Not an extremely rude expression, but harsh enough, inappropriate as a joke.

That's interesting about Koslov/Kozlov, Averys. Fox's official Fringe site goes with "Koslov" (and I just used the spelling from the closed-captioning on the episode), but you could be right.

Not a bad episode at all. Not one of my favorites, and it was pretty self-contained (I'm more of a fan of the episodes that give a piece to some bigger puzzle), but it was solid, and I loved the dissolving-into-ashes effect.

If "Koslov" is the official spelling, I'm fanwanking that the guy changed one letter to make his surname sound better :)

I liked this episode too. Maybe the next one will address the overarching story with parallel worlds and war, it's been a while since the other side took active steps.

That'd be good. I understand why Fringe goes episodic a lot (as opposed to having each episode build upon an ongoing over-arching plotline, a la Heroes) -- it's easier to attract new viewers, it makes the show more appealing for syndication, it's much easier to have some episodes written by freelance writers -- but I prefer the big picture, with parallel worlds and wars and vast conspiracies, to the smaller, contained stories.

Are the parallel worlds at war?!? Because if that's so, then I might have to get the Season One DVD, like, today and damn the absence of talking turtles and wisecracking swimsuit models.
Morgan Richter said…
Yeah, but it's not as dramatic as all that. With Fringe, it's more about the promise of big exciting future awesomeness, which is doled out in little bits. There are wars brewing, in other words.

Great review at (puerile giggle) TVgasm! Fringe is one of four network shows shows I actually try to watch. I admit I can't watch Heroes anymore. Too painful.

By the way - and this is completely off topic - your old place on Grand blvd is for rent. I thought about circling back for a closer look, but my lease isn't up for another three months. And it would be kind of weird.

Great to hear from you, Josh! Funny about the Grand house. When Ingrid and I were in Spokane summer before last, we had a chance to tour our childhood home (on the hill west of downtown. I don't even know what the area is called -- that strange no-mans-land by the Finch Arboretum and the Spokane House), which was up for sale, but we couldn't bring ourselves to do it.

Fringe and Heroes are night and day. I'm hanging in there with Heroes, but it's by a thread. Fringe doesn't make me cringe with embarrassment while watching it, so that's a big plus.

Loved the Fringe recap and loved the way that this blog was referenced! It was very humorous and a great way to start in on it.

Thanks, Patrick. Rest assured that if there'd been some sneaky way to make a reference to all the smart, funny people who regularly comment on this blog, I would have made it.

Hey, and look at that. Fifteen months later and I've finally caught up to this episode.

Ah, Fringe... thank you for taking me back.
