Woohoo! "Lonely In Your Nightmare!" I guess I pestered you enough about it on your blog.

Hilarious and enjoyable Duranlysis as ever, with the added pleasure of the Duran's capacity for "Sexyface" and the introduction of "malevolent gremlin"!

I didn't know there was a video of "Lonely…" without the London footage — the black & white section was the best part of the video. This time, I'm glad they made a second version of it.

On a song level, "Lonely…" is one of Duran's prettier ballads, and on the same Rio album as the iconc "Save A Prayer". I sometime go back and forth on which ballad I like better.

Lastly, the reason for the "recycled footage" you see was because the Duran Duran Video Album (the one they won one of two Grammys for, the awards Andy was upset that they didn't pick up) had transitions that connected them all together. I haven't read you mention it, but in my mind you've seen this video album as well? "Lonely" came in between "Planet Earth" and "Careless Memories" in the album.

Thanks for the great read, Morgan!

The malevolent gremlin is the dark side of the magical pixie.

Aha! Makes a lot of sense. You know, I actually haven't seen their video album, but my sister just also informed me that, yeah, "Lonely In Your Nightmare" blended into "Careless Memories." Too bad -- I was digging the thought of them just using the same footage of Simon in two separate videos for no special reason.

The revised version is so, so much better than the original version. For the most part, I usually find their various revised versions unnecessary (the revised "New Moon," with the topless lady in chains and Simon posing in front of a full moon, is just silly, and I can't imagine anyone has much use for that version of "Girls on Film" with all the porny bits removed), but in this case... yeah, they really needed to redo it. Good call on someone's part.

First, I have to agree that this *is* a great ballad, and also that the revised video offers some improvements. Both versions, in their own way, are moody and atmospheric (atmospheric-—a great Nick word that I’ve never forgotten since it was uttered from his lips).

But I can’t say that I like either version 100%. I can almost imagine a totally new one (hybrid) in my mind. I concur, as well, that Andy and Roger *are* adorable in that market shot in the revised video, and probably Andy is the cutest ever there, that I can think of. (Don’t be fooled, I’m still on Team Nick.)

Morgan, you said: “The line between “magical pixie” and “malevolent gremlin” is sometimes a fine one”.

- That’s what happens when you’re a Gemini :-)

I’ve got to get my hands on that additional video of the Durans on the elephants. Yeah, they should have used the footage more.

Somewhere out there, there's got to be a whole lot of previously-unseen footage of the boys riding elephants and generally running amuck in Sri Lanka, and I'd love to see it all. The Classic Albums episode on Rio is sheer fun. You get Nick gleefully telling his sad little story of arriving at the airport in Sri Lanka and optimistically looking around for his limo, then realizing he'd have to rough it in a flatbed truck. Almost thirty years later, and he still hasn't let it go.

Great review! I'm behind in commenting over here.

I did not know there was another version of this, I only know the revised version, for which I'm grateful! You pretty much summed it up, but the guys are so good-looking in the added footage that I still love watching this video just to see them looking so sexy. I'm a Roger girl, and yeah, he looks great.

Andy and Roger really do make a great team.

And elephants!! How could they NOT include them all on the elephants?? That would be way cool.

They're adorable together. My favorite Andy-Roger video is "New Moon on Monday," where they're secretly printing flyers for the resistance and getting harassed by soldiers, but this is a good one for them, too.

And elephants!! How could they NOT include them all on the elephants??

I could watch a full-length documentary of nothing but Durans riding elephants. It's pretty much the best thing ever.
