Despite the flippant title, the Strange Sick Sad Career mantle is bestowed only upon actors I genuinely like, such as Jonny Lee Miller and Michael Rosenbaum and Ioan Gruffudd … and, now, Thomas Gibson, who is freaking amazing in his role as ultra-grim FBI unit chief Aaron Hotchner on the CBS crime procedural Criminal Minds . How amazing? Consider this: I voted for Gibson with a clear conscience when he went head-to-head against Fringe 's magnificent John Noble in Entertainment Weekly's Under-Appreciated Entertainer of 2010 poll, an honor Gibson went on to win. The Strange, Sick, Sad Career of Jonny Lee Miller

(Archived from my now-defunct Geocities site) I blame my weird fascination with Jonny Lee Miller entirely on Orlando Bloom. Specifically, I blame it on the fact that the lovely Orlando, of the fierce cheekbones and stunning blond wig in "Lord of the Rings," has, as of this writing, an exact total of one movie available on video and nothing due in theaters until "The Two Towers" hits in December. Earlier this year, I started a new job I was pretty sure I really, really despised. Few things are more reliable for taking the mind off of daily drudgery than films starring cute boys with great bone structure. Because of the dearth of fresh Orlando material, I figured one attractive, talented English lad was as good as another, and decided to investigate the films of Jonny Lee Miller. The Strange, Sick, Sad Career of Ioan Gruffudd

This is my third Strange Sick Sad Career essay, and in this case the title seems kind of unfair. There's nothing strange or sick or sad about Gruffudd's career at the moment - in fact, his star is on the rise, thank you very much. I was sort of feeling guilty about lumping him in under the SSSC umbrella with people like Jonny Lee Miller and Michael Rosenbaum... and then I remembered 102 Dalmatians . He might live that one down someday, but today is not that day. Some general observations about Gruffudd: he's cornering the market on earnest and adorable. Broad comedy is not his forte: he should avoid any projects described as zany or whimsical. He's brilliant at playing characters with names like Horatio Hornblower or William Wilberforce, less so at playing guys named Freddy or Dan. He looks particularly fetching in waistcoats and breeches.
